Alba Truffle Museum – MUDET

Search, discover, be amazed!

In the heart of the city of Alba, an exhibition route unfolds entirely dedicated to the world of truffles, exploring their history, science, gastronomy, and sustainability.

The Museum retraces the history of this prized underground fungus with its unmistakable aroma: from its mythical origins, when it was believed to be created by the lightning bolts hurled by Zeus, to the latest scientific discoveries that recognize it as a sentinel of environmental health.

Ample space is dedicated to the lives of the trifulao and their dogs. Through everyday objects — such as the zappino, diaries, maps, clothing, lamps, and photographic materials — the Museum tells the story of a fascinating body of knowledge and traditions passed down orally from generation to generation.

Since 2021, the Search and Harvesting of Truffles in Italy has been inscribed on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The photographic project Truffle Hunters and Their Dogs by Steve McCurry portrays the intimate relationship between Piedmont’s truffle hunters and their dogs through powerful images.

The section dedicated to the biological cycle, morphology, and botany answers the most scientific curiosities through illustrations, charts, and period microscopes.

The truffle is deeply connected to its territory, as illustrated in the section dedicated to the International Alba White Truffle Fair, with a focus on the World Truffle Auction and the Donkey Palio.

Objects designed by international designers and creatives reveal the connections between truffles and the worlds of art and design, while a video takes visitors into the world of cinema through films in which the truffle plays a co-starring role.

From the earth to the table: the Museum also tells the story of the truffle’s role in the history of cuisine. Traditional recipes are placed in dialogue with images of contemporary interpretations by great chefs. A journey intertwined with Alba’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy, awarded in 2017.

Truffles are not found all year round; there are seasons when the forest rests and prepares itself.

The MUDET preserves the memory of the truffle and invites visitors to reflect on — and engage with — the environmental challenges that will shape its future.
